Isabel Waller (they/them) is a Dutch artist based in Berlin whose practice consists of sculpture, mask-making, installation, photography, and film. Working with ceramics, textiles, foam, latex, and performance, Waller investigates the ever-changing boundaries between body, material, and identity. Central to their practice is the concept of “human matter,” a reframing of the body as a material with its own characteristics such as shape, texture, and adaptability.
Through a process they call “creaturization,” Waller constructs hybrid beings that move between the familiar and the strange, proposing new possibilities for embodiment beyond traditional definitions of what it means to be human. Their works explore themes of queerness, transformation, post-humanism, and material experimentation, often evoking a tension between recognition and estrangement. Inviting reflection on how we perceive human matter and construct the self.
Waller graduated in 2024 with a Bachelor degree in Product Design and the Honours Program at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Their background in design informs their material sensibility, experimental methodology, and cross-disciplinary approach, merging craft with conceptual inquiry.
Rooted in Berlin’s experimental and queer art communities, Waller’s practice is a safe space for becoming, a speculative act of world-building where identity and self-expression can exist freely, beyond judgment or constraint. Guided by curiosity, freedom, and authenticity, they merge material experimentation with emotional and philosophical inquiry. Each work offers a quiet rebellion against fixed categories, calling for empathy, connection, and reflection on how we coexist with our own matter and the world around us.
